Archives - Visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II in 1985
Did you know? His Holiness Pope John Paul II was the first Supreme Pontiff to visit Luxembourg.

This historic visit took place on May 15th and 16th, 1985. The Pope traveled to Esch-sur-Alzette, Echternach, and Luxembourg City. Their Royal Highnesses Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte, welcomed the Holy Father at the Grand Ducal Palace. The current Grand Ducal Couple was also present for this historic visit, along with a very young Prince Guillaume.
During this visit, the Pope had the opportunity to meet Grand Duchess Charlotte, just a few weeks before her passing. In the second coloured photograph, she is seen with the Holy Father next to the Golden Rose, awarded to her by Pope Pius XII in October 1956 for her merits during the Second World War. The Golden Rose will be displayed on a table in the Palace this Thursday.
Tomorrow, sixty-eight years later, Pope Francis will present the Golden Rose to the statue of Notre-Dame, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Marian Jubilee.
